A misunderstood film, The Deerhunter is a devastating portrait of America where the sum culture in this small Pennsylvanian town includes domestic abuse, binge drinking and derealization. The only positive tradition is inherently foreign- a jubilant Russian Orthodox wedding. The key scene is a hollow and flat rendition of God Bless America sung by characters who have been too deeply affected by a war to question its integrity.
