힐 하우스는 섬유공장을 갖고 있는 휴 크레인 공작이 만든 웅장한 저택이다. 완벽한 가정을 이루고 싶은 그에게 부족한 게 있다면 바로 아이들. 휴 크레인은 이를 충족시기 위해 섬유공장의 어린아이들을 데려다 성에 가둬둔다. 그로부터 130년이 흐른 뒤, 이 저택의 한 맺힌 과거에 매혹된 데이비드 매로우(Dr. David Marrow: 리암 니슨 분) 박사는 어느날 불면증 연구라는 명분을 내세워 사람들을 힐 하우스로 끌어들인다. 불명증 연구라고 했지만 사실은 보이지 않는 공포감에 대한 연구다. 무모하고 허세가 심하지만 매혹적인 테오(Theo: 캐서린 제타존스 분), 장난기 많고 냉소적인 루크(Luke Sannerson: 오웬 웰스 분), 민감하고 내성적인 넬(Eleanor "Nelle" Vance: 릴리 테일러 분)은 이중적인 매로우 박사의 음모에 의해 우연히 힐 하우스 저택에 모여든다. 하지만 힐 하우스의 비밀을 자세히 알지 못하는 매로우 박사는 진실 반, 거짓 반을 섞어 점점 공포분위기를 조성하며 사람들을 관찰하기 시작한다. 박사의 이러한 의도를 증명이라도 해주려는 듯 힐 하우스는 실제로 이상한 분위기에 빠져든다. 어느날 잠을 자고 있던 테오는 쿵쿵거리는 발걸음 소리와 문을 부술 것 같은 누군가의 기습에 깨어난다. 특히 한밤중에 방안의 기온이 갑자기 영하로 떨어져 허연 입김이 뿜어나오자 놀라 소스라친다. 그러다 가장 감수성이 강한 넬이 초자연적 존재인 힐 하우스의 숨겨진 비밀들을 알게 되면서 악령의 집, 힐 하우스는 자신의 모습을 하나하나 드러내면서 사람들의 숨을 조여가기 시작한다.

"The Haunting" is a horror infused with mystery. Director Jan de Bont provides audiences with a plot that focuses on the infamous and terrifyingly secluded Hill House. The visitors to Hill House have been instructed by Dr David Marrow in an investigation of insomnia - portrayed with excellency by Liam Neeson. Neeson's character is trying emulating the study of fear and plays the part by scaring his subjects, however this all backfires when Hill House turns out to be haunted by an evil spirit to torment all of the characters. A case of the boy who cried wolf!

This is definitely the worst horror/fantasy movie (if you can even call it that) I've ever seen. The acting is terrible (unfortunately, from Liam Neeson) and the goofy computer effects are even worse. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone and definitely not those who are horror lovers.
