All Quiet on the Western Front
Jul 06, 2024.
i was pretty on board with truffaut's anti-war quote, but now im not sure. its hard to see how much more anti-war this movie could get. "cycles" in this adaptation: feeding the younger generation to the war machine again and again, reusing rousing speeches/patriotic rhetoric, and effectively replacing soldiers the same way they recycle their uniforms. one of the more cynical takes on war for sure, and it's refreshing (if I can even use that word) not to see an overly "hollywood" take on another pro-war film (see top gun). and the decision to end the war on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month?? for the sake of poetic closure even though thousands died within those 6 hours? you can't make that shit up "modern warfare is like chess. it's never about the individual. it's always about the whole."
