In 1920s Ireland young doctor Damien O'Donovan prepares to depart for a new job in a London hospital. As he says his goodbyes at a friend's farm, British Black and Tans arrive, and a young man is killed. Damien joins his brother Teddy in the Irish Republican Army, but political events are soon set in motion that tear the brothers apart.

안 볼 이유가 없다. 예술가가 되기전에 시민이 되어야 한다는 감독의 말이 인상깊다. 그런 생각이 이상한 것이 아니라는 걸 영화로 만들고 그 영화로 말해주는 감독이 소중하다. 그런 어른이 소중하다. 또한 중요한 점은 영국인인 그가 그 나라의 역사의 곪은 부분을 어떻게 바라보고 있는지 예술로 핑계대지 않는 것이다. 핑계가 되지 않는 예술. 그리고 정치적인 영화의 시의성에 관하여 질문을 던질 수 있게 한다. 대단한 거장.
