Dahomey

i actually quite like this style of documentary, shooting-wise. this had a very cinematic take on the lives of everyday Beninois; i got to see a side of urban West africa that felt true to when i visited (accra, but still). my point is, it didn’t feel patronizing or overly banal.
my favorite part was definitely the university seminar discussing immaterial and material cultural heritage, the effects of colonization on their own language and society, the question of what makes art art and not merely sacred imagery, the role of politicians in bringing these works home and whether they should be satisfied with the 26 works they now have. i feel like i never see well-educated young africans engaged in intellectual conversations in most films; i could listen to them talk forever. benin is lucky to have them.
and the carotone ad towards the end?? kind of striking.

짧고 굵었다. 필요한 말들을 베닌의 학생들의 목소리를 통해, 그리고 물체의 목소리를 통해 전달했다. 학생들의 토론은 강렬했고, 그들이 문화재의 부재와 함께 살아왔고 돌려받을 주인이라는 감독의 말과 함께 더 힘있게 남았다. 도난당한 문화재의 영혼이 매 순간 감돌도록한 연출이 인상깊다. 다큐멘터리에서 창의 작 연출이 스토리텔링을 돕는 다는 증거. 스피리추얼한 아우라를 다루려는 감독의 스토리텔링 기법이 오히려 학생들의 토론이 가졌던 폭발적 힘에 가려 마법을 잃고 약간 식상하게 느껴졌던 부분이 아쉽다면 아쉅게 다가왔다. 유럽의 제국주의 시절 에스노그라피의 이름으로 박물관의 큐리오로 전락했던 아프리칸 마스크와 사람들의 역사는 근대 미술에 아름답고도 뒤틀린 공간을 낳았다. 이런 역사 때문인지 작품 속 ‘마스크의 목소리’는 우스만 셈벤의 ‘Black Girl’ 이 떠올랐던것 같다 학생들의 치열한 토론도, 문화재 반환의 현장을 작품으로 담았다는 사실도, 문화재에 베닌의 언어 ‘톤’으로 말하는 목소리를 부여했다는 것도, 온 작품 속에 등장하는 이 작품과 상황만을 위한 새 음악도, 아프리카의 베닌 공화국이 다호메이 왕국의 주인임을 확고히 하는 하나의 선언처럼 느껴진다. 시간을 두고 생각해보면 더 많은 생각들이 떠오를 것 같은, 그래서 역사의 주인이 되는 방법을 계속해서 고민하게 될 것 같은 작품이다.
