Following the death of his employer and mentor, Bumpy Johnson, Frank Lucas establishes himself as the number one importer of heroin in the Harlem district of Manhattan. He does so by buying heroin directly from the source in South East Asia and he comes up with a unique way of importing the drugs into the United States. Based on a true story.

This is such a modern classic to me! The film leans on two equally powerful performances by Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, who play a police office and street gangster at opposite sides of the law, but with a mutual respect and understanding for one another’s life choices. An epic film (in length too) by Ridley Scott that’s very understated. It’s production design feels so very much of this time period. The film reels you in and keeps you on edge throughout!

American gangster is the next classic gangster mob movie after the godfather series. Good watch, put the kids to bed first though.

This is a very fast-paced film and lives up to the hype. The gangster films are largely overdone and this film also finds itself in the stereotype of criticizing power and corruption, but it is redeemed by its excellent coverage of these topics.
