An adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Long Island-set novel, where Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the lavish world of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Soon enough, however, Carraway will see through the cracks of Gatsby's nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await.

Attempts to adapt famous novels to film is always a tough endeavor and this film just barely passes. Leo DiCaprio plays the enigmatic Jay Gatsby, a man who is always chasing what he can’t have and paying the price for it. In watching the film, the viewer comes to understand that’s its Jays greed for an idealized version of life that leads to his isolation from society. Jay does not take any initiative and leaves everyone else to figure out what he wants. While this is true to the novel, Gatsby in the film is left unexplored, naturally the movie has to cut parts of the book but I believe they missed the mark with his characterization and hardly developed Nicks at all. The best parts of the movie are the soundtrack and the aesthetics, which is unfortunate since the story is so deeply symbolic and interesting.

A somewhat forgettable film in a list of Gatsby films. Although it did not contain that missing substance we felt we needed to find in the remake, it did have amazing big elaborate set pieces, a great sense of camera movement and spectacle, as well as some really solid performances throughout. Maybe the story just works better as a book?

Who doesn't love a Baz Luhrman film? This is probably the best of all of them, and I think the film is possibly better than the book, in my opinion. The film contains so many small details that I don't think the book is even long enough to fit in. I really enjoy all the complex realtionships between all the characters, especially the relationship of the narrator and outsider and of those around him. He is then thrown into this world of glamour and secrets, where he doesn't seem to understand how he fits in, but once he realises what it costs to be at the top, and the type of people you have to deal with, I think he's more than happy to try and stay away. The set design and costume design in this film is also to die for, and if nothing else, everyone can enjoy this and the fun soundtrack.

Gatsby is the best film created with the beauty of the film, the actors' acting and the intention of the director. Despite the long movie time, I feel impressed once again once a year. Please look at Gatsby's agony and love!
