빔 벤더스의 영화에 빠지지 않는 주제를 말하라 한다면 '대화의 단절'이 아니라 '소통의 회복'이라 답하겠다.

가정폭력 상담 프로그램이나 이수하고 있어야 마땅할 양반이 전화통 붙잡고 회한을 늘어놓고, 10대에 남자 잘못 만나 인생 망친 여자가 거기에 맞장구 쳐주는 골때리는 광경을 영화가 감상주의 잔뜩 끼얹어 보여주는 순간, 그 이전까지의 그나마 괜찮았던 인상마저도 한꺼번에 사그라 들었다.

그녀는 그에게서 도망쳤고, 그는 그녀를 도망치게 만든 스스로에게서 도망쳤다. - 그는 그녀에게 용서를 구하지 않는다. 그 스스로 자신을 용서할 수 없기에, 그래서 그녀에게 용서받을 자격도, 그녀 품으로 돌아갈 자격도 없다고 생각하기 때문에. 그는 그녀의 살결을, 그 온기를 다시 느껴보지도 않고, 그녀에게서 영영 멀어진다. 자신이 너무나 사랑하는 그녀를 그토록 아파하게 만든 스스로에게서 영원히 도망치기 위해, 파리 텍사스, 그 텅 빈 공간으로 떠난다. - Travis: "She told him that she dreamed about escaping. His arms were burning, and he threw himself outside and rolled on the wet ground. Then he ran. He never looked back at the fire. He just ran. He ran until the sun came up and he couldn't run any further. And when the sun went down, he ran again. For five days he ran like this until every sign of man had disappeared." - Jane: "I... I used to make long speeches to you after you left. I used to talk to you all the time, even though I was alone. I walked around for months talking to you. Now I don't know what to say. It was easier when I just imagined you. I even imagined you talking back to me. We'd have long conversations, the two of us. It was almost like you were there. I could hear you, I could see you, smell you. I could hear your voice. Sometimes your voice would wake me up. It would wake me up in the middle of the night, just like you were in the room with me. 와 어떻게 영화를 이렇게 만드냐. 독창적이고 아름다운 작품 엄청난 매력의 초반, 설렘의 중반, 심금을 울리는 마지막 (물론 내내 심금을 울린다) 내 인생 최고의 영화. 진짜 경이롭다 최고의 사랑영화이자 가족영화이자 인생영화이자 로드무비 모든 배우들의 연기 정말 훌륭하고 특히 음악은 정말 압권이다 ㆍ 그래도 그는 다시 비행기의 높이까지는 올라갈 수 없다 두려워서 "I'm not afraid of heights. I'm afraid of falling."

행복할 자격이 없음을 이미 알고 있었기 때문에.

망하고 보면 그 망함이 과거의 어떤 지점에서 비롯된 것이라고 믿고 싶어진다 그런 지점은 대체로 없다 열심히 걸었는데도 영 쓸쓸한 곳에 와있는 일은 그냥도 생긴다 텍사스의 파리처럼
