警官を相手に戦って服役中だったランボー（シルヴェスター・スタローン）は、元上官トラウトマン（リチヤード・クレンナ）から特殊任務につくことを条件に釈放された。その特殊任務とは、かつて東西陣営が総力をあげて戦った地でのアメリカ人行方不明兵士及び捕虜の動向を調査することだったが、戦闘は一切不用、情報収集だけで、後続部隊が救出するというものだった。目的地に向っ′たランボーはパラシュート降下中にアクシデントに見舞われ、ナイフと弓矢以外の武器は全て失った。やがてランボーは現地の連絡員コー・バオ（ジュリー・ニクソン）と出会い、捕虜収容所潜入を果たした。

First Blood was such a unique film, in what it was doing and how it was doing it. Highly political and utilizing the tragedy of the character to gain some actual good dramatic moments. Needless to say, this movie is not as good. It is more of a run of the mill action movie, that inspired so many copycats it is quite ridiculous. It still has fine acting and action, it is just not as unique as the first one.
