世界の終焉を迎えた未来。荒廃した大地を、ショッピングカートを引いた父親（ヴィゴ・モーテンセン）と少年（コディ・スミット＝マクフィー）が南に向かって歩いている。親子の全財産は、防水シート、ポリ袋、毛布、双眼鏡と拳銃だけだった。わずかな生存者は皆、燃料と食物を探してさまよっていた。そんな中、道端の車中で寝ていた親子は、トラックに乗った武装グループに襲われる。少年を捕まえた若い男に向かって父親は銃弾を放ち、難を逃れる。彼らは人食い集団だった。父親は少年に、自分たちは“善き者”であり続けることを説く。父親は眠る度、少年の母親（シャーリーズ・セロン）の夢を見る。世界の終焉を迎えたあと、彼女は重い心の病を患った。そして少年を産むと闇の彼方へ消え、自ら命を絶った。父親は彼女と決別するため、写真と結婚指輪を捨てる。

One of the most exciting and thrilling movies to date. Its suspenseful and its word for word exactly like the book. I mean it even has the little details from the book as well. I mean everything in it from the way they look to the way they feel is the same. The scenery is beautiful and the way they all put it together really portrays what their telling you.
