1968年のペンシルベニア州クレアトン。マイケル（ロバート・デ・ニーロ）、ニック（クリストファー・ウォーケン）、スチーブン（ジョン・サベページ）、スタン（Ｊ・カザール）、アクセル（チャック・アスペグラン）の5人は町の製鋼所に勤める親友グループで、休日には山で鹿狩りを楽しむ平凡な若者たちだった。ある土曜日、ベトナムに徴兵されるマイケル、ニック、スチーブンの歓送会と、スチーブンとアンジェラ（ルタニア・アルダ）の結婚式が町の教会で合同で行なわれた。祝福する人々の中には、アル中の父親を抱える身ながら、帰還後のニックと結婚の約束をしたグループのアイドル、リンダ（メリル・ストリープ）もいた。式の後、彼らはそろってアレゲニーの山へ鹿狩りに出た。1970年、北ベトナムでの戦況は酸鼻を極めていた。逃げまどう農民を虐殺するベトコンに対し、マイケルは狂ったように撃ちまくっていたが、偶然にも、その戦場でニックとスチーブンに再会した。しかし、北側の攻勢は激しく、3人は捕虜になってしまい、床下につながれる身となった。

A misunderstood film, The Deerhunter is a devastating portrait of America where the sum culture in this small Pennsylvanian town includes domestic abuse, binge drinking and derealization. The only positive tradition is inherently foreign- a jubilant Russian Orthodox wedding. The key scene is a hollow and flat rendition of God Bless America sung by characters who have been too deeply affected by a war to question its integrity.
