ピレネーのある農場の息子ジャック（Ｗ・グレェン）と教師の娘マリー（Ａ・ヴィアゼムスキー）は、ある日一匹の生れたばかりのロバを拾って来て、バルタザールと名付けた。それから十年の歳月が流れ、いまや牧場をまかされている教師とマリーのもとへ、バルタザールがやって来た。久しぶりの再会に喜んだマリーは、その日からバルタザールに夢中になってしまった。これに嫉妬したパン屋の息子ジェラール（Ｆ・ラフアルジュ）を長とする不良グループは、ことあるごとに、バルタザールに残酷な仕打ちを加えるのだった。
