1958年、ニューヨーク。貧乏青年トム・リプリー（マット・デイモン）は、日銭稼ぎのピアノ伴奏のために赴いたガーデンパーティで、造船業界の大物ハーバート・グリーンリーフ（ジェームズ・レブホーン）と知り合う。彼はイタリアで放蕩生活を送る息子ディッキー（ジュード・ロウ）を連れ戻してほしいとトムに頼んだ。早速ナポリへ飛び、ディッキーに会うトム。作家の卵のマージ（グウィネス・パルトロウ）と豪奢な同棲生活を送っていたディッキーは、父からの命令を聞いて迷惑がるが、トムがジャズ・ファンと知るや、彼をクラブに連れ出す。全てが物珍しいトムをセイリングやジャズクラブに連れ回して遊び回るディッキー。やがて、トムはひそかにディッキーに愛情を抱くようになる。

If you are on a Matt Damon binge, don’t forget to watch this one to see him at his creepiest! You can tell that Damon studied hard for this role since it required intricate subtleties in his character. A great and very scenic film that takes place partly in the beautiful Italian countryside. A film about obsession where the main character never feels in touch with other characters but is smart enough to study human behavior and impersonate it the best way he can. This is also peak Jude Law with a great supporting role from Philip Seymour Hoffman.
