ヴェローナ・シティの利権を二分する財閥、モンタギューとキャプレット。両家の反目は連綿と続き、ストリートでは若者たちの争いが絶えない。しかし渦中のモンタギュー家嫡子ロミオ（レオナルド・ディカプリオ）の心を曇らせるのは、かなわぬ恋の悩みだった。親友マーキュシオ（ハロルド・ペリノー）の誘いでキャプレット家の仮装パーティーに潜り込んだのも片思いの恋人に一目会うためだったが、そこで彼は天使の羽を身に着けた見知らぬ美少女と運命の出会いをする。目と目を交わした刹那から、二人の間で燃えあがる新しい恋の炎。少女の名はジュリエット（クレア・デーンズ）、皮肉なことに、ロミオにとっては宿敵キャプレットの一人娘だったが、一族の因縁も二人の想いを止めることは出来ない。その夜、キャプレット家の裏庭で、窓辺で、プールで、熱烈に愛を誓い合う二人。翌日、ジュリエットは、両親の決めた許婚を振り切って教会へと向かう。秘密の結婚式に立ち会ったのは、理解ある神父ロレンス（ピート・ポスルスウェイト）と介添えの少年達だけだった……。

While this movie is almost hilariously bad, it’s depiction is actually one of the most accurate to the original intention of the story. Both of the leads are excellent in this and their acting prowess is certainly felt. The romance is actually easier to understand when portrayed in this format. Plus the sass of the side characters is hilarious to watch. The adaptation of Shakespeare plays is hard to master, but this film is one of the better attempts, capturing what made Romeo and Juliet so intriguing without muddling the intent of the story. Too often the intention is seen as a love story instead of youthful foolishness and the consequence of senseless violence. An excellent portrayal and good movie.
