1920年代の中国。父親に先立たれ、貧しい生活をグチる義母との暮らしから抜け出すため、頌蓮（コン・リー）は19歳の夏、嫁に行くことになった。嫁ぎ先の先方はその地方の素封家で、頌蓮の前に第1夫人の大太太（チン・スウユエン）、第2夫人の卓雲（ツァオ・ツイフェン）、第3夫人の梅珊（ホー・ツァイフェイ）と3人の夫人がおり、それぞれ一院、二院、三院と呼ばれる住居に住んでいた。第4夫人となった頌蓮が住居として与えられた四院にはその日、内も外も赤い提灯が飾り立てられていたが、それは大旦那・陣佐千（マー・チンウー）の寵愛を得ることができるという印であった。
