Western remakes of Eastern films usually never capture the same popularity or even excitement of the originals, and this film is one of the greatest examples. The Korean version of Old Boy is a cult classic that many people have heard of even if they have not seen. Remaking the film took away the elements of why it was great in the first place and just rebrands it as a typical western thriller. The original film was innovative because in its genre and country, it had not been seen before, however this version is just the already popular movie “Taken” recreated. It plays off of stereotypical action hero tropes and doesn’t take the time to really explore the characters narrative. The film, while following mostly the same plot as the original, is boiled down to violent scenes as the reason for watching , focusing on gore and shock value rather than developing an attachment to the characters story. Spike Lee is typically hailed for his brilliance at film making, however this one in particular missed the mark. It would have been a better move to make a new film entirely rather than remake an already successful movie.
