Based on real events, this film centers on the black females that worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the space race in the 1960s. Katherine Johnson, a mathematician that works in the racial and gender segregated section at NASA, is assigned to work on the Space Task Group where she becomes the first black woman on the team. Katherine goes on to solve various problems on the team with her impressive knowledge of mathematics. However, most men on the team are continusously doubtful in her skills simply because she is a woman, and a woman of color for that matter. The film heavily focuses on the sexism that Katherine and other women faced in the work field during that time period and how men doubted their capabilities. The film is outright inspiring to watch as these amazing women face the difficulties of not only designing and operating intricate machinery that has to be deemed safe for space travel, but also facing the prejudice and discrimination from men in the workplace. There are many reasons to watch this movie: from a feminists perspective, from a civil rights perspective, or simply from an interest in space persecutive; the film is a must see for all.
