1776年、サウス・キャロライナ州。フレンチ・インディアン戦争で勇名を馳せた英雄ベンジャミン・マーティン（メル・ギブソン）は、18歳の長男ガブリエル（ヒース・レジャー）を筆頭に、先立った妻が遺した7人の子供のよき父親として農夫暮しの日々。折から英国の圧政からの解放を叫ぶ独立戦争が勃発、血気盛んな年頃のガブリエルは参戦したが、戦争の実体を知り抜いたベンジャミンは苦い顔を見せる。だが2年後、負傷したガブリエルが我が家に帰還。ガブリエルは看護を受けるが、英国軍のタヴィントン大佐（ジェイソン・アイザックス）が彼を追ってきた。冷酷無比な彼はガブリエルをスパイ容疑で強制的に連行したばかりか、それを制止しようとした次男トマスを殺し、さらに家を焼いて立ち去った。憤怒にかられたベンジャミンは戦士の血を呼び覚まし、3男ネイサンと4男サミュエルを連れ、英国軍を森で待ち受けて奇襲攻撃、小隊を血祭りにあげてガブリエルを奪還した。

It's literally the exact same movie as Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" from 5 years prior, but it's great nonetheless.

The Patriot is an enjoyable enough war action-packed movie that is completely and sumptuously exciting and entertaining. With rebellion in the air of the summer of 1776, we follow our main protagonist and hero, Benjamin Martin in a heartwarming and touching story.

I saw it twice and liked it vastly more the second time around, when I'd adjusted my expectations and had my bearings from the get-go. Then it became about digging the spectacle.

A classic film one would watch in their US history class to go over the Revolutionary War and all that it entailed. It is a great family study as well and really captures an everyday person’s perspective of the time period and being on the ground in a time when so much chaos is ensuing around you. The film does a great job of capturing this injustice and chaos. A solid performance from Mel Gibson and the late great Heath Ledger.
