87年冬。ミネソタ州の自動車ディーラー、ジェリー・ランガード（ウィリアム・Ｈ・メイシー）は多額の借金を負い、早急に大金を必要としていた。彼は妻ジーン（クリスティン・ルドリュード）を偽装誘拐して、自動車業界の大物である妻の父親ウェイド（ハーヴ・プレスネル）から身代金を引き出し、借金返済に回そうとしていた。ジェリーは整備工場で働く元囚人から2人の男を紹介してもらい、ノース・ダコタ州ファーゴへ向かった。神経質に喋り通しの変な顔の男カール（スティーヴ・ブシェーミ）と一言も喋らない凶暴そうな大男グリムスラッド（ピーター・ストーメア）は、誘拐の実行を約束する。ジェリーは義父と彼の財政顧問に駐車場を作るという提案をしており、そのための借金を申し込んでいた。だが、義父が彼に大金を投資するわけがなく、そこで考えた最後の手段が偽装誘拐計画だった。ところが、自宅に帰ったジェリーに義父は、新事業の打ち合わせをしようと言う。

A strange genre of movie is utilized here with a dark comedy about a man who pays two people to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom against her rich father. The atmosphere of the movie is very unique and hard to replicate which has led to this movie being deemed a famous classic movie.

With such a unique storyline, Fargo tells the story of a man who plans to hire someone to kidnap his wife. The story is wild from start to finish, and you're constantly left wondering how the story will play out. A must watch for sure.
