ハリウッド貯水ダムを見下ろすロサンゼルスの高級住宅地に朝が訪れる。建築会社の副社長スチュワート・グラフ（チャールトン・ヘストン）は40を越したばかりの働きざかり。一見何不自由ない暮しのように見えるがグラフには重苦しい悩みがあった。それは妻レミー（エヴァ・ガードナー）と離婚寸前の状態だったからだ。レミーは夫が出世したのは、彼女の父親サム・ロイス（ローン・グリーン）が建築会社の社長で、彼を引立てたからだと思い込み、彼を軽んじてきた。

To be honest I could not help but find the 1970s' "Earthquake" an overuse of the doomsday disaster genre. For some reason, the characters were not likable enough to sympathize with. The plot itself was very predictable and I would not watch again.

One of those stories that without a particularly strong plot manages to come through in a big way, due to the acting, dialog, situations and direction.

The special effects are surprisingly good, especially given that it was produced in the 70s. I does get slightly "soap-opera-ey" at points. It feels like it mostly relies on the special effects to pull it through- a natural disaster movie isnt the most original and there wasnt a lot extra in the plot.
