弁護士のサム・ボウデン（グレゴリー・ペック）は、妻のペギー（ポリー・バーゲン）、12歳になる1人娘ナンシーと共に幸福な暮らしをしていた。ところが、マックス・キャディ（ロバート・ミッチャム）という男が、この町に現れてからというものは、ボウデン家は次第に恐怖へとまき込まれていった。キャディは、残虐な性的犯罪で長年刑務所に入っていたが、自分が有罪になったのは公判廷でサムが証言したためと、サムを深く恨んでいた。キャディは、サムに復讐することをほのめかした。
