不動産会社に勤めるマリオン(ジャネット・リー)は、ふとした出来心で会社の4万ドルを横領してしまった。 夜になって降り出した豪雨をさけるべく、彼女は旧道沿いの寂れたベイツモーテルを一夜の宿に選ぶ。 管理人はハンサムだが、どこか暗い影を宿した青年ノーマン(アンソニー・パーキンス)。 実直で誠実な彼と語らうことで、自分の過ちに気付いたマリオンは、自室に戻ってシャワーを浴びようとするが そこに突如ナイフを持った人影が現れる・・・!
