金や名声のために世界中を旅する傭兵ウィリアム(マット・デイモン)は、20数名の部隊とともに半年に及ぶ旅の末、ようやくシルクロードの中国国境近くにまでたどり着く。だが部隊は砂漠地帯で馬賊の襲撃を受け、多くが命を落としてしまう。真夜中、闇に身を隠していた部隊は謎の獣に襲われる。ウィリアムがとっさに剣を手にし、その獣の手首を切り落として退散させるものの生き残ったのはウィリアムとトバール(ペドロ・パスカル)だけだった。翌日、再び馬賊に追われた二人は、荒れ果てた大地をひたすら馬で駆け抜け、やがて彼らの目の前に長く、巨大な城壁が現れる。その城壁こそ万里の長城であった。馬賊が後方に迫るなか、二人は武器を捨て、長城防衛の命を受ける禁軍に降伏することを選択。長城の前線基地ではウィリアムらの処分を決める会議が開かれる。即刻処刑すべきという武将たちの声が大勢を占めたが、戦略を司るワン(アンディ・ラウ)はウィリアムが持っていた獣の手に興味を示し、彼らの利用価値を示して処刑を思いとどまらせる。

Absolutely hated it. Maybe I would've liked it a bit if I didn't know who directed it beforehand. As crappy as a cross-culture movie can get.

Zhang Yimou is one of my favorite directors, known for his use of color and breathtaking visuals in his works, like Hero and House of Flying Daggers. this film is not like those films. Soldiers are color coded according to duty, an insanely unrealistic notion...and so too are the monsters that serve as the primary antagonists. oh, and don't forget the whole white savior thing. If you love a good Chinese military film, watch something else, like Red Cliff.

This is an interesting mix of western and Asian culture with the old traditions of the Chinese Great Wall and ancient warriors. The Chinese singer Luhan is also in the movie with a small role but he did really well! The whole story is very unique and interesting and I would definitely watch it again!
