エリザベート・フォグラー（Ｌ・ウルマン）は、今や舞台女優として確固とした地位を築き、家庭生活においても善良な夫（Ｇ・ビヨルンストランド）と可愛い息子に恵まれ、至極幸福であった。ところがある日、彼女は舞台で「エレクトラ」に出演中、突然セリフが喋れなくなってしまった。それはほんの一瞬間の出来事だったから、別に大したこともなく無事演技を終えたのだったが、数日後、その発作が再発、彼女は言葉を失うと同時に、身体の動きをも失ってしまった。まる三カ月の精密検査にもかかわらず、精神的にも肉体的にも何ら欠陥をみつけ出せなかった。そこで担当の女医はエリザベートに、バルト海に面した自分の別荘への転地療養をすすめた。

An unafraid and raw introspection into the other within ourselves done so in an incredibly surreal tone. Breathtaking performances and strategic cinematography warrant the universal acclaim for Persona. I didn't understand everything and I think I don't need to call this one a masterpiece.

This is an excellent movie that will have you thinking way after the movie has ended. Great cinematography, story and acting. A must watch. Criterion collection version is the way to go.
