マックス（ジェイミー・フォックス）は、ロサンゼルスのタクシー運転手として、ごく平凡な日々を送ってきた。だが今夜、アニー（ジェイダ・ピンケット＝スミス）という女性検事を客に乗せ、心のふれあいを感じたところから、彼の運命は変化し始める。次にマックスのタクシーを拾ったのは、ヴィンセント（トム・クルーズ）というプロの殺し屋。彼は麻薬取引に関わる組織からの依頼で、今夜5人の証人を殺害する任務を授かっていた。ヴィンセントに脅されて、一晩のドライバー役となるマックス。やがて麻薬捜査官のファニング（マーク・ラファロ）が捜査に動き出す。ヴィンセントは計画を一つずつ冷徹に完了させていくが、マックスは次第に、彼に抵抗を示す勇気を手にしていく。

It's by no means a perfect film, but it's an action movie with a heart and a mind, built to do much more than just make you feel as if you've endured a visual pummeling.

The whole movie is tense and full of action. It is definitely a thriller that will make you think- there are a lot of elements of psychology present here. Definitely not for a younger audience- it is very violent and powerful.

A great action thriller and very understated by Michael Mann. This film shows off Michael Mann’s range but also his affinity for films shot in cities. He turned Tom Cruise into a villain which no one thought was possible. He then made a New York City taxi cab driver the hero of the film. The film builds like a traffic jam, and then begins to unweave itself as it continues.
