サンフランシスコの空にそびえ立つ138階建ての世界一高い超高層ビル“グラス・タワー”が落成の日を迎えた。設計者のダグ・ロバーツ（ポール・ニューマン）とオーナーのジム・ダンカン（ウィリアム・ホールデン）は、屋上に立って眼下にひろがる市の光景を見下ろしていた。ロバーツは疲れていた。一刻も早くコンクリートの大都会からのがれ出て、大自然のふところに飛び込みたかった。工事主任のギディングス（ノーマン・バートン）と打合わせをすませたロバーツは婚約者のスーザン・フランクリン（フェイ・ダナウェイ）と久しぶりに二人だけの時間をもった。惨事は、そのときすでに始まっていた。“グラス・タワー”の地下室にある発電機が故障したため主任技師のキャラハンが予備の発電機を始動させたとたんショートし、81階にある物置室の配線盤のヒューズが火を発し、燃えながら床に落ちた絶縁体の破片が発動機のマットをくすぶらせ始めたのだ。保安主任ハリー・ジャーニガン（Ｏ・Ｊ・シンプソン）の緊急報告を受けたロバーツは配線工事が自分の設計通りに行われていないのに憤然として、落成式の一時中止をダンカン企業の広報部長ダン・ビグロー（ロバート・ワグナー）に申し入れたが、ダンカンは拒絶した。

"The Towering Inferno" is a Doomsday-style disaster movie! It definitely has not been one of my favourites but may be that is because the movie feels too old for me, even though it was only released in the 1970s. For some reason, I could not find myself invested in the plot or evolution of the characters throughout the movie but this might be because I could not quite enjoy the effects and visuals. I really wish I was able to enjoy this popular blockbuster movie more than I did...

The Towering Inferno is an intense film that will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. By far the best disaster movie ever made with a terrific cast. I would recommend this movie and it is definitely not a waste of your time.
