南カロライナ州の合衆国海兵隊新兵訓練基地。ヴェトナム戦争のさなかの今日も、これから8週間の地獄の特訓を受ける新兵たちが入隊してきた。ジョーカー（マシュー・モディン）、パイル（ヴィンセント・ドノフリオ）、カウボーイ（アーリス・ハワード）といった面々だ。彼らは早速頭を丸刈りされ、整列させられて、鬼のような訓練教官ハートマン（リー・アーメイ）からウジ虫呼ばわりされ、厳しい訓示を受ける。実際訓練は苛酷で厳しいもので、しかもハートマンは容赦なく彼らをシゴく。特に何をやらせてもノロマで不器用なデブのパイルはシゴきの対象とされ、あげくはパイルのミスのとばっちりが他の訓練兵に及び、仲間からもリンチにあう。そんなパイルをジョーカーは精一杯かばうのだが、パイルは徐々に精神に異常をきたし、目つきも変わってくる。遂に卒業前夜にトイレで狂気が爆発、ハートマンを撃ち殺し、自らも銃をくわえて絶命する。

Really captured a good essence of some of the real reality of Vietnam war or at least tried its best. Wish it was longer. I liked how the movie wasn’t as war focused more people focused on

First half is a perfect story. Nothing to add there, just watch. On the contrary, the second half comes off as a generic war film with nothing really special to it, it doesn't even feel cohesive as the main character seems unaffected by the previous events. That said, it's Kubrick so it's amazingly shot all the way, but the sound and visuals of shots and explosions often feel off.
