Close Encounters is a Spielberg masterpiece, and while it may not be as fondly remembered as ET is a more thought provoking film. In this film Spielberg uses suspense and fear of the unknown to show that just because something is alien doesn't mean it's bad. A genuinely good piece of optimistic science fiction.
