30세가 되기도 전에 비틀즈의 인기를 앞서고, 엘비스 프레슬리, 제리 리 루이스 등과의 어깨를 함께 했던 ‘쟈니 캐쉬’의 천재적이고 열정적인 음악 인생과 지독하게도 외롭고, 열정적이었던 그의 사랑이 아름다운 음악에 맞춰 펼쳐진다. 쟈니 캐쉬(호아킨 피닉스)는 어린 시절 부모님의 끔찍한 사랑을 받던 형이 사고로 죽은 뒤 평생을 형의 자리를 대신해 부모님의 사랑을 얻기 위해 노력하며 힘들어한다. 어린 시절부터 노래를 좋아했던 그는 작은 레코드회사에서 처음으로 자신의 앨범을 낸 뒤 순식간에 전 미국 소녀들의 우상으로 떠오르며 스타가 된다. 이미 어린 시절 첫사랑과 결혼한 유부남이었던 쟈니는 역시 가수인 준 카터(리즈 위더스푼)와 투어를 다니다 열정적인 사랑에 빠지게 되고, 이미 온갖 약물중독으로 망가질 대로 망가진 그에게 ‘준’은 ‘쟈니’를 그 자신으로부터 구해줄 수 있는 유일한 사람이 된다.

The construction is deliberately episodic, and individual settings often appear to owe more to the modern conceptions of stage-technique than to the cinema. But the ingenuity with which the episodes are assembled sets a new level in film-construction.

Most biographical movies tend to fall into the trap of just simply revealing a timeline that could just be learned from a wikipedia page. This one however, incorporates more personality into it, and it really feels like you are learning more about Johnny Cash's personal life.

Walk the Line is a great film that follows the life of Johnny Cash and truly does him and his career justice. This is a must see for all Johnny Cash fans out there, or just for music fans in general.
