슬리피 할로우
1799년 뉴욕의 북쪽에 위치한 '슬리피 할로우'란 외진 산골마을에서 의문의 살인사건이 연쇄적으로 발생한다. 공교롭게도 희생자들은 모두가 목이 잘려 살해된 끔찍한 사건이었다. 크레인(조니 뎁)은 고문을 통해 자백을 받아내는 판사들의 구습에 반기를 들고 과학적 수사로 공정한 판결을 해야 한다고 주장하는 젊은 수사관이었다. 그의 일관된 주장에 골치를 앓던 판사들은 마침내 그를 살인사건의 현장인 '슬리피 할로우'로 보낸다. 슬리피 할로우에 도착해서 크레인이 들은 얘기는 한마디로 황당한 전설 같은 것이었다. 미국 독립전쟁 때, 악명 높던 독일인 용병이 적에 의해 목이 잘려 그 마을 근처 숲에 묻혀있다가 '호스맨(크리스토퍼 월큰)'이란 목이 없는 귀신으로 살아나 사람들의 목을 베어간다는 것이었다. 크레인이 도착한 이후에도 희생자는 점점 늘어만 갔다. 크레인은 끈질긴 수사 끝에, 이 사건이 슬리피 할로우의 지주였던 반가렛의 비밀결혼과 이에 얽힌 유산문제로 발생했다는 사실을 밝혀낸다. 반가렛의 상속유언장을 둘러싸고 관련된 인물들이 목없는 호스맨에 의해 하나 둘 살해되고, 없어진 유언장으로 인해 유력한 법정상속인 반타셀이 범인으로 의심을 받게 된다. 크레인은 반타셀의 딸 카트리나(크리스티나 리치)를 사랑하게 되고, 그녀의 집안에 대한 내력을 알게 된다. 한편, 범인으로 알았던 반타셀 마저 호스맨에 의해 살해를 당하자 사건은 점점 더 미궁 속으로 빠져 버린다. 사건해결을 위해 호스맨을 직접 찾아나선 크레인과 유일하게 살아남은 최후의 상속자 카트리나 마저 호스맨의 위협을 받게되는데...

Sleepy Hollow is definitely up there for one of my favorite Tim Burton movies. The story, the sets, the special effects and most of all the cast and director make this a film well worth seeing, definitely the best thing out of Hollywood in a very long time.

This is a very powerful rendition of the classic Sleepy Hollow story, and because of that, it is not for the weak movie viewer. This movie is pretty frightening, at least for someone who is not used to watching a lot of scary movies. The strong visuals only add to its creepiness factor. If you like scary movies, you might enjoy this.

Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" captures the Gothic and reminds people why they love the infamous Washington Irving's classic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Burton stays faithful to Irving's world, held up by pillars of romance, fantasy, horror and supernatural. The creepy atmosphere and stunning visuals also hold up the movie to the spotlight. Some may argue that the plot is overstuffed but there is no denying that "Sleepy Hollow" is a thrilling, exciting adventure. Maybe it should be a well known fact that by pairing Burton and Depp, there is no room for mistakes or disappointments.
