<로마>는 아카데미상을 받은 감독 겸 작가 알폰소 쿠아론(<그래비티>, <칠드런 오브 맨>, <이 투 마마>)의 어린 시절을 반영한 자전적 작품이다. 멕시코시티 내 로마 지역을 배경으로, 한 중산층 가족의 젊은 가정부인 클레오(얄리차 아파리시오)의 시선을 따라 이야기는 흘러간다. 감독 자신을 키워낸 여성들에 대한 깊은 애정을 담은 이 작품은 1970년대 멕시코의 정치적 격랑 속에서 주인공들이 겪는 가정 내 불화와 사회적인 억압을 생생히 재현한다.

Alfonso Cuaron reaches a level of movie making prestige with this movie. The black and white is so expertly done and each long shot with no cuts slowly immerse you more and more into this beautiful world as the story of the young maid grows on you without you realizing it. While some people may find the pacing a bit slow for their liking, the realness and cinematography skill is plenty to make up for this small issue which I didn’t find myself having a problem with. It’s worth a watch even if you can’t appreciate the slowish story just to experience a movie that has never been done like this before and will most likely never be replicated.
