Characters with highly detailed personalities get their grit tested in vast treeless terrains of the classic western in Coen brothers' reinvigoration of the forgotten genre. Sharp dialogue and sharper performance by the three leads, especially young Hailee Steinfeld take your senses hostage. Add in beautiful shots and occasional lore and we got ourselves a cruelly captivating western.

I feel like making a contemporary movie infused with the Western genre is probably really difficult when we are so accustomed to the cult classics with such legends as John Wayne. BUT director Joel Coen did a terrific job to find bewitching characters to play around in a funny, exciting and rough plot. The movie almost parodies what we know of the Western genre, turning it on its head. The end result is superb and mesmerizing. Lets not forget the beautiful locations and visuals.

The Coen Brothers can master every genre so effortlessly! True Grit was a solid film that introduced the genre to a unlikely and often unseen hero, a little girl. I love that it flipped the genre on its side for this one by introducing new elements that made it sound out but also made it a quintessential Coen Brothers film.

A remake of the classic John Wayne movie that is a solid movie however just does not live up to the original film. As far as modern westerns go, this is still a movie that can be enjoyed by fans and regular movie-goers.
