If any comic has a claim to have truly reinvigorated the genre, then The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller--known also for his excellent Sin City series and his superb rendering of the blind superhero Daredevil--is probably the top contender. Batman represented all that was wrong in comics and Miller set himself a tough task taking on the camp crusader and turning this laughable, innocuous children's cartoon character into a hero for our times. The great Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, the arguably peerless Watchmen) argued that only someone of Miller's stature could have done this. Batman is a character known well beyond the confines of the comic world (as are his retinue) and so reinventing him, while keeping his limiting core essentials intact, was a huge task.Miller went far beyond the call of duty. The Dark Knight is a success on every level. Firstly it does keep the core elements of the Batman myth intact, with Robin, Alfred the butler, Commissioner Gordon, and the old roster of villains, present yet brilliantly subverted. Secondly the artwork is fantastic--detailed, sometimes claustrophobic, psychotic. Lastly it's a great story: Gotham City is a hell on earth, street gangs roam but there are no heroes. Decay is ubiquitous. Where is a hero to save Gotham? It is 10 years since the last recorded sighting of the Batman. And things have got worse than ever. Bruce Wayne is close to being a broken man but something is keeping him sane: the need to see change and the belief that he can orchestrate some of that change. Batman is back. The Dark Knight has returned. Awesome. --Mark Thwaite After ten years away from the public eye, a wave of violence in Gotham City brings Batman back as a vigilante. <씬시티>와 <300>의 작가 프랭크 밀러의 (이하 <다크 나이트 리턴즈>)는 1986년 2월부터 6월까지 ‘4부작 미니 시리즈’로 기획된 작품으로서 배트맨 시리즈 중 가장 중요한 작품이자 팬들의 필독서다. 배트맨의 진면목을 가장 잘 보여주는 작품으로 인정받으며, 한국의 배트맨 마니아들 사이에서도 가장 읽고 싶은 배트맨 만화로 손꼽혀왔다. ‘노년이 된 배트맨’ 이야기로, 너무 일찍 세상에 나온 배트맨 후일담, 즉 ‘외전’ 격의 작품이다. 그러나 이 작품은 한동안 가볍고 유치한 이야기에 지나지 않았던 배트맨 시리즈를 다시 어둡고 무거운 누아르 탐정물로 되돌려 놓았고, 나아가 슈퍼히어로의 존재 이유와 의미에 대한 질문을 던지며 슈퍼히어로 장르 전체의 판도를 바꿔 놓았다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 또한 복잡한 스토리와 진지한 주제 의식, 독특한 연출 기법으로 그때까지 아이들의 장르였던 만화를 어른의 장르로 격상시키며 아트 슈피겔만의 <쥐> , 같은 해 출간된 앨런 무어의 <왓치맨> 과 함께 만화를 문학의 경지로 끌어올렸다고 인정받고 있다. 우리나라에는 20년을 훌쩍 넘겨 뒤늦게 도착했지만, 세월의 간격이 무색하게도 전혀 녹슬지 않은 힘을 발휘하고 있다. 상세이미지
